چکیده
We report detailed studies on the characterization of an intramolecular NH-F hydrogen bond formed within a fluorinated "proton sponge" derivative. An ammonium ion, generated from 8-fluoro-N,N-dimethylnaphthalen-1-amine, serves as a charged hydrogen bond donor to a covalently bound fluorine appropriately positioned on the naphthalene skeleton. Potentiometric titrations of various N,N-dimethylnaphthalen-1-amines demonstrate a significant increase in basicity when hydrogen bonding is possible. X-ray crystallography reveals that NH-F hydrogen bonding in protonated 8-fluoro-N,N-dimethylnaphthalen-1-amine is heavily influenced by ion pairing in the solid state; bifurcated and trifurcated hydrogen bonds are formed depending on the counterion utilized. Compelling evidence of hydrogen bonding in the 8-fluoro-N,N-dimethylnaphthyl-1-ammonium cation is provided by gas-phase cryogenic vibrational photodissociation spectroscopy. Solution-phase infrared spectroscopy provides complementary results, and the frequencies of the N-H stretching mode in both phases are in excellent agreement with the computed vibrational spectra. NMR analysis of protonated 8-fluoro-N,N-dimethylnaphthalen-1-amine demonstrates significant H-F coupling between the N-H hydrogen and fluorine that cannot be attributed to long-range, through-bond interactions; the couplings correlate favorably with calculated values. The results obtained from these experiments are congruent with the formation of an NH-F hydrogen bond upon protonation of 8-fluoro-N,N-dimethylnaphthalen-1-amine.

Computational study of the intramolecular proton transfer between 6-hydroxypicolinic acid tautomeric forms and intermolecular hydrogen bonding in their dimers
This paper is a density functional theory (DFT) calculation of intramolecular proton transfer (IPT) in 6-hydroxypicolinic acid (6HPA, 6-hydroxypyridine-2-carboxylic acid) tautomeric forms. The transition state for the enol-to-keto transition is reported in the gas phase and in four different solvents. The planar and non-planar dimer forms of 6HPA keto and enol, respectively, were also studied i...
متن کاملComputational studies on electron and proton transfer in phenol-imidazole-base triads
The electron and proton transfer in phenol-imidazole-base systems (base = NH(2)(-) or OH(-)) were investigated by density-functional theory calculations. In particular, the role of bridge imidazole on the electron and proton transfer was discussed in comparison with the phenol-base systems (base = imidazole, H(2)O, NH(3), OH(-), and NH(2)(-)). In the gas phase phenol-imidazole-base system, the ...
متن کاملDynamic investigation of hydrocarbon proton exchange membrane Fuel Cell
Sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK) is categorized in a nonfluorinated aromatic hydrocarbon proton exchange membrane (PEM) group and considered as a suitable substitute for common per-fluorinated membranes, such as Nafion, due to wider operating temperature, less feed gas crossover, and lower cost. Since modeling results in a better understanding of a phenomenon, in this study a dynamic o...
متن کاملA theoretical study on quadrupole coupling parameters of HRPII Protein modeled as 310-helix & α-helix structures
A fragment of Histidine rich protein II (HRP II 215-236) was investigated by 14N and 17O electric field gradient, EFG, tensor calculations using DFT. This study is intended to explore the differences between 310-helix and α-helix of HRPII both in the gas phase and in solution. To achieve the aims, the 17O and 14N NQR parameters of a fragment of HRPII (215-236) for both structures are calculated...
متن کاملHydrogen bridges of polycyclic aromatic systems with O-H···O bonds — a gas-phase vs. solid-state Car-Parrinello study
The current study belongs to a series of investigations of polycyclic aromatic compounds containing intramolecular hydrogen bonds. Close proximity of the coupled aromatic system and hydrogen bridges gives rise to resonance-assisted hydrogen bonding phenomena. Substituted naphthols are ideally suited for this kind of investigation. The parent compound, 1-hydroxy-8-methoxy-3-methylnaphthalene, an...
